05.08.2010: Essex, CT - With a group of privateer re-enactors behind them, Matt Stoner, of Killingworth, and his friend Mason Rice of Haddam, with a candy cigarette, watch as Stoner's mom performs with the Totoket Ancient Fife & Drum Corps and fifteen other fife and drum corps gathered at the end of Main Street along the Essex waterfront. The event was part of the town's Burning of the Ships Ancient Fife and Drum Parade. Fifteen Fife and Drum Bands marched in the parade, sponsored by the Sailing Masters of 1812. The event commemorates the sinking, in 1814, of 28 ships by the British in the War of 1812. Photograph by MARK MIRKO | mmirko@courant.com
